During Full Council last week, Hampshire Conservatives overwhelmingly voted to support a 3rd runway for Heathrow Airport.
Members from right across the County spoke strongly to support the motion from Deputy Leader, Cllr Keith Mans, who represents Brockenhurst, to Cllr Rod Cooper from Farnborough.
The motion proposed by Executive Member, Cllr Rob Humby and Council Leader, Roy Perry, reads “ This Council welcomes proposals for the 3rdrunway at Heathrow and encourages the Government to invest further in transport infrastructure in the South East including southern rail access to Heathrow to maximise the benefits of international gateways in the South East which support wider economic prosperity in the UK”
An attempted amendment by a Liberal Democrat member to drop the word “welcome” from the motion was ruled out of order by the Chairman, Cllr Graham Burgess, on the advice of the county solicitor as negating the meaning of the motion.
Conservative Leader, Roy Perry, said “I am pleased we have put it firmly on the record that Hampshire supports a 3rd runway at Heathrow. Retaining Heathrow as a major international hub airport is important not only for the national economy but also for the economy of the south east and Hampshire. The Enterprise M3 LEP estimate Heathrow generates 10,000 jobs in the LEP area.
Britain has been discussing this airport proposal for far too long and it is now important to get on with it. We especially want to get the infrastructure to improve access including a direct rail link from Hampshire into Heathrow.
I am sorry the Liberal Democrats couldn’t get their act together and give this motion their full support but we are used to that. Fortunately positive support from councillors right across the county was overwhelming”
